SYRACUSE, N.Y. – On February 15, 2023, at 1:43 p.m., Syracuse Firefighters were alerted by Onondaga County 911 to a possible fire at 312 Garfield Avenue, on the City's South Side. Firefighters from Sation 8 (S. Salina St) arrived on the scene in under 3 minutes and reported smoke showing from the two-story home. Multiple teams of firefighters entered the home, with hoses and hand tools, to extinguish the fire and search for trapped occupants. The fire was found to have originated in a mattress, in a bedroom on the first floor. Firefighters were able to quickly extinguish the flames and remove the mattress from the structure.
Quick response times, coupled with aggressive firefighting tactics, prevented this fire from growing and extending into one that could have been much more destructive. As a result of firefighting efforts, damage to the home was minimal and no occupants were displaced because of this fire. Firefighters remained on scene after extinguishing the fire to remove smoke and toxic gases from the home.
More than 30 fire personnel responded to the scene, including command and support staff. Syracuse Police, National Grid, and American Medical Response responded to the scene as well. There were no injuries reported to civilians or firefighters. We thank our partners at the 911 center, SPD, National Grid, and AMR.
