Occupant Escapes Bassett Street Blaze

Published on May 18, 2023

Syracuse, NY-On May 18, 2023, at 3:08 p.m., Syracuse Firefighters were alerted to a reported structure fire, in the 200 block of Bassett Street, by the Onondaga County 911 Center. Callers were reporting seeing heavy black smoke from several streets away. Firefighters from Station 10, on East Genesee Street, arrived on the scene moments later to find fire engulfing the rear of the two-story home at 214 Bassett Street. A signal ‘99’ was transmitted and crews began an aggressive fire attack.

Firefighters stretched hoses to the rear of the structure, while other firefighters entered the home to search for any trapped occupants. There was heavy fire on the exterior of the home that was extending into the first floor. A coordinated effort by all on the scene allowed firefighters to halt the spread, preventing more significant damage. The fire was brought under control, and all occupants were accounted for. The sole occupant who was at home when the fire started was able to exit the building safely before firefighters arrived.

The exterior of the building on the first and second floor in the rear sustained significant fire damage, with the first-floor interior also sustaining fire, smoke, and water damage. Syracuse Fire Investigators were on the scene working to determine the origin and cause of the fire. Three occupants were displaced by this fire, they are being assisted by the American Red Cross. There were no injuries reported to civilians or to firefighters. The fire was declared out after approximately 30 minutes.
