Syracuse Firefighters Respond to a Vehicle Into a Structure on Pond St

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – On April 3, 2023 at 4:11 p.m., Syracuse Fire units were dispatched to a reported MVC involving a car and house at 704 Pond St. While en route, the Onondaga County 911 center provided additional information that there may be someone trapped by the vehicle. Additional Fire Units, with specialized equipment, were added to the call. Firefighters from Station 2 (Lodi St.) arrived on the scene in less than three minutes and found a car had struck the front of the house at 704 Pond St., crashing through front porch and into the first floor of the home.

 

Firefighters from Engine 2 and Truck 2 quickly set to action, providing care to injured who had already freed themselves from the wreckage, and checking for additional trapped victims. The Rescue Company, which carries specialized equipment for dealing with building collapses, arrived on scene to assist with the efforts. Rescue was able to use special shoring equipment to shore up the roof of the porch, so firefighters could work underneath it safely.

 

In total, two patients were transported via American Medical Response, to local hospitals. One patient was in the vehicle when it struck the house, the other was reported to have been in the front room of the house at the time of the crash. It was reported that the occupant of the vehicle was pulled from the wreckage by bystanders prior to the arrival of the Fire Department. Attempts to rescue the occupant of the house were under way when firefighters arrived. Firefighters from Truck 2 were able to safely remove the victim and pass them off to waiting ambulance personnel.
 
The house sustained heavy damage to the front and first floor, and Syracuse Code enforcement Officials were on scene with Syracuse Fire Prevention Bureau officials to assess the damage. In total 17 fire department personnel responded to this scene from 4 different city fire stations.
