In Syracuse, we have a positive history of working with youth who want to apply their talents in the public service sector. Internships and fellowships are an opportunity to do that while making an impact on our city and how it serves people. We are looking for fellows that are thoughtful students, interested in municipal government, and believe in problem solving for good. As a Syracuse intern or fellow, you become a member of City departments responsible for projects, tasks, and research.

The major difference between internships and fellowships is that internships are for college classes or for college credit while fellowships are paid positions. You are not required to be a resident of the city of Syracuse to intern for the city but you are required to be a resident to do a most paid fellowships. In special instances, we have partnerships with universities and institutions that bring fellows from across the world. Those opportunities go quickly! COMMON QUESTIONS

WHO CAN APPLY?

This internship is open to both undergraduate and graduate students in any major.

WHAT IS THE SELECTION PROCESS?

Our selection process may vary depending on the volume of applicants, the position, or the interviewing department. However, our standard process involves:

  • a resume and cover letter review
  • screening for a select group of candidates
  • a first round of interviews with placement department
  • in some instances, an applicable exercises
  • And if you are applying for a fellowship, a final interview with Human Resources

HOW LONG IS THE INTERNSHIP?

Internships can be as short as a Summer or Winter Semester or as long as your internship program will allow at your school. Your internship length will be defined before receiving your final internship acceptance letter.

IS THIS A PAID INTERNSHIP?

Our internships are for college credit or class experience. Some departments offer fellowships which are paid. In some instances, we can provide direct funding for a limited number of fellows if they have work-study rewards as part of their financial aid. We execute these work-study arrangements with your college or university. If you are a work-study student and would like to do your work-study at a City of Syracuse department, please be proactive in communicating with your school financial aid and us about the possibility of securing external funding for your internship so that we can provide needed documents in a timely manner. This is also a question you will encounter in our application.
