Civil Service Jobs

Civil servants are employees who work for the government at the state, local and federal levels to provide a service for the public. City government employs people in numerous careers whether with or without advanced degrees. Often, positions in city government are civil service jobs meaning they may require taking an exam. Exams vary by the position you apply for. Exams can be free or have an application fee of $15 to $20.

There are three kinds of exams: competitive, continuous, and those only for existing government employees.

Competitive exams are used for positions that open periodically. The exam score is used to sort out the top candidates. Continuous exams are issued for positions that are always in need of people. The exam, in this case, is simply to gauge applicant aptitude for the position.

The third type of exam is available for current government employees who are looking to move up in their civil service career. It allows them to compete with others based on their experience, education and test score. If you are interested in taking a civil service examination, contact the Onondaga County Department of Personnel. They are responsible for administering Civil Service exams on behalf of the City of Syracuse. They can be reached at 315-435-3537 or visit employment.ongov.net.
