Seven Displaced Following Union Place Fire

Published on December 27, 2023

Syracuse, NY-  On Wednesday, December 27, 2023, at 3:48 p.m., Syracuse Firefighters were alerted by the Onondaga County 911 Center to a reported possible structure fire at 404 Union Place, on the City’s North Side. Firefighters from Station 2, on Lodi Street, arrived on the scene one minute and thirty seconds later. The first arriving crews found a two-story, multiple-family house with flames blowing out a first-floor window on the side of the building. Crews were also alerted to the possibility of people trapped inside the building. A signal ‘99’ was transmitted.

The first arriving crews initiated an aggressive interior fire attack, with crews stretching hoses into the building to battle the flames, and other crews starting searches for the potentially trapped occupants. As additional fire companies arrived, more hoses were stretched into the building to cut off the fire’s spread. Teams of firefighters also performed methodical searches of each apartment on the first and second floor. All searches were negative; no victims were found. It was later confirmed that all occupants were able to escape the fire on their own. Hose teams were able to extinguish the fire on the first floor in approximately 10 minutes. Firefighters checking for fire spread found flames in the attic as well and were able to extinguish them, preventing more severe damage. The fire was declared out after approximately 35 minutes.

The fire was determined to have started in a first-floor apartment. Syracuse Fire Investigators are working to determine the cause. The first-floor apartment where the fire began sustained severe fire, smoke, and water damage. Fire also damaged the attic. The remainder of the structure sustained smoke and water damage. Seven occupants were displaced by this fire. They are being assisted by the Red Cross. There were no injuries reported to civilians or to Firefighters at the scene.
