Barricaded Subject on East Brighton Avenue

On Wednesday, March 8th 2023, at around 12:17 p.m., members of the Syracuse Police Department responded to 115 East Brighton Avenue, for a physical domestic complaint. Upon arrival, officers located a 30-year-old female victim, who stated that she had been assaulted by her child’s father. At that time, information was learned that the child’s father, Alexander Ortiz, 33, of Syracuse, was inside the residence with the infant child and armed with a knife.
Syracuse Police Officers entered the residence and located Ortiz in the dining room near a bedroom in the rear of the house. Ortiz was holding his infant child in his left hand and a large kitchen knife in his right hand. Despite several commands from police officers, Ortiz refused to drop the knife or release the child and stated numerous times that the police officers would have to kill him. Eventually, the officers convinced Ortiz to release the infant child, at which time Ortiz then retreated into a bedroom with the knife and shut the door. Officers exited the residence with the infant child and facilitated a medical evaluation.
The Syracuse Police Department Emergency Response Team members responded to the residence and began negotiations with Ortiz. After several hours, Ortiz exited the residence, where he was taken into custody without further incident. The 30-year-old female victim was treated for minor injuries and the infant child was found to be unharmed. Both mother and infant were transported to University Hospital for additional evaluation.
Alexander Ortiz was transported to the Onondaga Justice Center, where he was lodged on the following charges:
- Criminal Contempt in the First Degree
- Criminal Contempt in the Second Degree
- Two counts of Endangering the Welfare of a Child
- Harassment in the Second Degree
