Trash Pickup

We pick up trash and recycling on the same day every week.

Overview

Step 1.When is my trash collection day?

To find out your pickup day, click below to plug your address into our Trash & Recycling Pickup Route Map below.

When you put out your trash, remember:

  • Put your trash out by 6 a.m. on your collection day. If you put it out later, it may not be picked up.
  • Don’t put your trash out too early. If you put your trash out before 8 p.m. the night before your collection day, you can get a fine. It’s called an “illegal set out.”
  • Make sure it’s easy for our workers to take your trash. If your trash is filled with water or frozen to your can or to the ground, we can’t take it.

Trash and recycling pickup is delayed by one day the week for certain holidays. Pickups are delayed for following holidays:

  • New Year's Day
  • Martin Luther King Day
  • Memorial Day
  • 4th of July
  • Labor Day
  • Thanksgiving Day
  • Christmas Day

Step 2.What doesn’t go into the trash?

  • Bulk items such as furniture
  • Construction or yard waste
  • Electronics:
    • Cell phones
    • Monitors
    • Televisions
  • Human remains
  • Insecticides or pesticides
  • Medical waste (review our guidelines for disposing medical waste)
  • Flammable items:
    • Aerosols, such as air fresheners, cooking sprays, and hairspray
    • Gasoline or motor oil
    • Paints, solvents, or thinners

For information about how to safely dispose of these things, or if you have questions, visit the Onondaga County Resource Recovery Agency or call 315-448-2489.

Step 3.How much trash can I put out?

During our regular trash collection, we have limits on the amount of trash we'll take for each home or apartment based on size, weight, and number of trash bins or bags.

  • Size: No more than three 30-gallon trash bags or cans.
  • Weight: No more than 50 pounds.
  • Number of bags or bins: You can use a total of 3 trash bins or 30-gallon bags each week. You can use a combination of bags and bins, but use no more than 3 total.

If you need to dispose of more trash, call Cityline at 315-448-CITY(2489) or schedule a bulk trash collection. You can also bring your trash to an OCRRA drop-off site.

If you are a landlord, you are responsible for correctly managing the disposal of trash for your building — and for any fines if you don’t.
