Syracuse Parks Offers Lifeguard Training Class Starting March 19

Published on March 03, 2023

Class and certification fees waived for City residents who sign up to work at least 20 hours a week

As summer approaches, the City of Syracuse Parks, Recreation and Youth Programs will begin offering a lifeguard training class on Sundays starting March 19 through May 1 from 5:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at Valley Pool (4942 S Salina St).

“Summer will be here before we know it,” said Parks Commissioner Julie LaFave. “Recruiting, training, and hiring lifeguards is essential to open our pools for summer, but we need willing participants from the community to make it happen. We are encouraging residents 15 years and older to take advantage of this opportunity to ensure another great season in the city of Syracuse.”

Participants must be at least 15 years or older by the last class and pass a pre-requisite swim test. Prerequisite swim tests are ongoing and free of charge. Online pre-registration is required.

To register or view the full list of dates and swim test requirements, visit http://bit.ly/3Yl7QpM. Participants will be enrolled in the lifeguard training class upon successful completion of the pre-requisite swim test.

Class and certification fees will be waived for City of Syracuse residents who enroll to work during 2023 summer season for a minimum of 20 hours per week. Non-city residents are welcome and encouraged to register for a pre-requisite swim test but will be subject to the $75 class fee and $80 certification fee to enroll in the lifeguarding training class.

Participants will be taught skills and techniques for Lifeguarding, Professional Rescuer CPR, First Aid, and AED. Upon successful completion of the course and hiring process, students will receive the American Red Cross Lifeguarding Certification. The certification is valid for two years.  The class does not include Waterfront certification.

Additionally, registration for spring swim lessons will open March 10 at 9:00 a.m. at syracuse. recdesk.com. Lessons will run March 14 through May 13 and be available on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays or Saturdays for half-hour sessions. Lessons are for ages 14 months and up. Lessons are $10 per person for city resident and $35 per person for non-city residents.
