This project aims to replace the Kirk Park Pedestrian Bridge over Onondaga Creek. The existing bridge serves as a pedestrian crossing, linking the Creekwalk on the west side of Onondaga Creek with Kirk Park on the east side. However, the bridge has surpassed its intended service life and no longer meets current safety and accessibility standards. Additionally, it fails to provide the necessary connectivity between key neighborhood amenities. This project aims to replace the outdated bridge with a new structure that will enhance functionality, safety, and connectivity, to better serve the community’s needs.

The City of Syracuse welcomes public comments and input on this project. Residents can provide feedback via the link above or attend the public meeting on February 11. Details are provided on the right tab.

What is Being Done?

The purpose of this project is to provide a safe crossing of Onondaga Creek for pedestrian traffic, and maintain the connectivity of the Onondaga Creekwalk and Kirk Park. The project hopes to address the bridge's structural deficiencies using cost-effective methods to reduce maintenance and repair costs, while ensuring a safe, long-term crossing with minimal social, economic, and environmental impact.

Under this project, the existing bridge will be removed and replaced on an altered horizontal alignment and a raised vertical profile. The proposed structure and reconstructed approaches will carry a 14-foot wide shared-use path. The profile will be raised approximately 5’ at the bridge in order to meet the recommended 2 feet of freeboard during the future 50-year storm event. Geosynthetic reinforced soil (GRS) ramps will be constructed to carry the shared-use path from existing grade to the raised bridge profile. Standard railing, grades, and radii will be provided along the approaches. The combination of the improved waterway opening and the raised profile will maintain existing backwater elevations. Approximately 820 feet of approach reconstruction will be required to improve the approach alignment and tie in the proposed structure. The project will balance cut/fill quantities to maintain existing floodwater storage.
