Job Description

The City of Syracuse Office of Corporation Counsel is seeking an experienced attorney to handle some transactional work as well as complex civil litigation in state and federal court, including the defense of civil rights claims, personal injury, property damage and contract claims. The attorney should be able to independently manage various phases of litigation, including discovery, motion practice, trials and appeals. The successful candidate must demonstrate analytical, writing, and oral advocacy skills. The successful candidate should also have some familiarity with transactional work.

The Office of Corporation Counsel offers a supportive, collegial environment without the pressures of billable hours and client marketing. Attorneys are given wide autonomy to manage their work, but have a team of fellow attorneys to offer support and guidance.

Typical Work Activities

  • Handles all phases of civil litigation in state and federal court, including pleadings, discovery, motion practice, trials, and appeals.
  • Represents the City in matters involving civil rights claims, personal injury, property damage, and contract disputes
  • Prepares and reviews legal documents such as pleadings, motions, briefs, and settlement agreements.
  • Conducts legal research and provides written and oral analysis on a variety of municipal law issues.
  • Appears in court for conferences, hearings, trials, and other proceedings on behalf of the City.
  • Engages in settlement negotiations and alternative dispute resolution where appropriate.
  • Provides legal advice and guidance to City departments and officials on a range of legal and operational matters.
  • Assists with transactional matters, including drafting and reviewing contracts, agreements, and other legal documents.
  • Collaborates with other attorneys and staff within the Office of Corporation Counsel to ensure effective representation of the City.
  • Performs related legal work as required. 

Minimum Qualifications

Must be admitted to the New York Bar and should have between one (1) and three (3) years of experience.
