Job Description

The work involves responsibility for supervising and participating in the repair and maintenance of automotive, construction and other types of mechanical equipment. Under the general supervision of an administrative superior, an employee in this class diagnoses, assigns and supervises the repair work performed in a department garage. Work assignments are received in the form of oral and written instructions or by complaints regarding the operations of specific vehicles or equipment. The crew leader exercises independent judgment in diagnosing the problem and assigns the repair work to the mechanics and mechanic helpers through oral instructions and/or written work sheets. Work is checked through occasional inspections while the repairs are in progress and by final inspections for work quality and performance of the repaired equipment. The employee performs skilled mechanical work or assists a mechanic in performing repairs that are unusually difficult and require a very extensive knowledge of the trade. Direct supervision is exercised over Automotive Mechanics, Automotive Mechanic Helpers and other subordinate employees assigned to the garage area. Does related work as required.

Typical Work Activities

  • Inspects equipment, diagnoses the cause of equipment failure and malfunction and decides to repair, replace or rebuild parts.
  • Assigns, inspects and makes a final check of the work of skilled and unskilled auto mechanics in the general repair and maintenance of automobiles, light and heavy trucks, small engine equipment such as lawn mowers, chain saws, etc., gasoline and diesel engines, bulldozers, draglines, graders and related earth moving public works equipment.
  • Instructs and may assist the mechanics in the replacement and repair of transmissions, differentials, rear axle assemblies, radiators and automotive electric work by offering suggestions as to methods of repair, assisting in difficult repairs or with unusual problems.
  • Supervises through inspections and may assist a mechanic in the installation and repair of hydraulic controls and in the removal, tearing down, repair, rebuilding and replacement of all types of gasoline and diesel engines.
  • Performs master mechanic work on all types of equipment; does cutting, welding and brazing.
  • Maintains the garage by making sure the work area is clean and orderly, that the tools and equipment are used properly and maintained in safe working condition, etc.
  • Requisitions parts, gasoline, oil, grease, etc. by listing the item(s) needed, quantity, part numbers, a brief description of the item if needed and any other necessary information and submits this to the individual authorized to make purchase; may recommend vendors.
  • Maintains a record of all repair work that is requested and all work that is completed.
  • Reviews and/or maintains daily time sheets or cards on all employees and may keep a record of all vacation, sick and personal time that is used.
  • Submits annual budget requests for all materials and equipment that is needed.
  • May be required to operate motor vehicles for testing.
  • May use a personal computer for recordkeeping or obtaining information.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Thorough knowledge of the principles, methods, materials and tools of the automotive mechanics trade.
  • Thorough knowledge of the principles of operation of gasoline and diesel engines and of the repair and maintenance characteristics of a variety of earth moving and other public automotive equipment.
  • Skill in the use and care of tools machinery and equipment of the automotive mechanics trade.
  • Ability to adapt available tools and repair parts in specific repair problems.
  • Ability to supervise and instruct skilled mechanics in a manner conducive to full performance and high morale.
  • Ability to understand and carry out complex oral and written instructions and to work from diagrams sketches and broken parts.
  • Ability to keep simple records.

Minimum Qualifications

Promotional

  • Three (3) years of permanent non-competitive class status in the title of Automotive Mechanic

Open-Competitive

  • Five (5) years of full time work experience, or its part time equivalent, in the repair and maintenance of automotive equipment

Special Requirement Depending on Assignment

When required to operate a motor vehicle, possession of a valid New York State Non-CDL or CDL, including any special endorsement, as required for the type of vehicle being operated.
