Job Description

The work involves responsibility for the direct supervision of a number of employees engaged in cleaning public buildings and institutions. Under supervision, an employee in this class exercises some independent judgment in planning and scheduling the work of subordinates. The work includes a variety of cleaning activities and is generally repetitive in nature. Work performance is reviewed by inspection of the area of assignment for general cleanliness and for compliance with special instructions. Does related work as required.

Typical Work Activities

  • Supervises and participates in the cleaning of offices and institutional areas.
  • Inspects work area to determine completion of assignment.
  • Orders, stores and issues cleaning supplies.
  • Trains employees in proper method of duties such as sweeping, mopping and waxing floors.
  • Trains employees in the proper and safe use of power equipment such as scrubbers and polishers; cleaning rugs and furniture; washing windows; cleaning lavatory fixtures.
  • Trains employees in the proper procedure to order necessary supplies.
  • Maintains custodial equipment; makes minor repairs to toilets, sinks, fountains, etc.
  • Maintains necessary records and prepares required reports relating to personnel, supplies, equipment and work performed.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Good knowledge of the materials, methods and practices used in large-scale building cleaning.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Knowledge of the operation, uses, and care of cleaning equipment.
  • Ability to train and supervise subordinates in a manner conducive to full performance and high morale.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to keep records and make reports.

Minimum Qualifications

Two (2) years of work experience, or its part-time equivalent, in building or maintenance work.
