Job Description
The work involves responsibility for assigning, supervising and inspecting work performed in the maintenance and repair of a variety of gasoline, diesel and hybrid (gas and electric) powered motor equipment, inclusive of heavy equipment with a vehicle weight of at least 12,000 pounds. Under general supervision of an administrative supervisor, an employee in this class is responsible for all diesel, gasoline and hybrid (gas and electric) powered motor equipment maintenance and repair work and for maintaining an inventory of all the parts and equipment used in the repair work, including preparing requisition requests or may coordinate parts procurement and inventory with inventory control staff. The employee exercises independent judgment in preparing work schedules, prioritizing staff assignments and maintaining an inventory of supplies and equipment sufficient to ensure the safe and efficient operation of the motor equipment. General supervision is exercised over a number of employees, including a first line supervisor. The employee's work is checked through occasional inspections by administrative supervisors. Does related work as required.
Typical Work Activities
- Directs and supervises assigned staff in the safe and efficient maintenance and repair of gasoline, diesel and hybrid (gas and electric) powered motor equipment, inclusive of vehicles weighing at least 12,000 pounds
- Develops, schedules and manages a preventive maintenance program designed to maintain vehicles and equipment in safe operating condition
- Manages equipment maintenance for both on and off road vehicles and equipment; establishes replacement schedule for fleet and equipment; oversees warranty work
- Makes recommendations to administrative supervisor on needed equipment and vehicle repairs; researches relevant facts and cost information
- Prepares equipment and small tool budgets
- Writes and reviews specifications for equipment purchased
- Selects and requisitions essential supply of parts and materials; reviews and signs requisitions and repair orders
- Evaluates products and work performed by vendors and approves payment to vendors
- Maintains written records and prepares reports of work performed, labor and materials used, gains, losses, etc.
- May participate in the review of vehicle accidents; reports observations and makes recommendations
Minimum Qualifications
- Promotional: Two (2) years of permanent competitive class status as a Heavy Equipment Mechanic Crew Leader
- Open Competitive: Seven (7) years of work experience, or its part-time equivalent, in the maintenance and repair of gasoline and diesel powered motor equipment, inclusive of heavy equipment with a vehicle weight of at least 12,000 pounds, four (4) years of which must have been in an administrative or supervisory capacity
