Job Description

The Administrative Law Judge will assist the Director and Chief Administrative Law Judge in conducting administrative hearings of charges of municipal code violation, statutory violations, and fee disputes relative to matters that constitute a danger or threat to the public health, safety, or welfare of the City of Syracuse. Candidates for this role should demonstrate a passion for public service and a strong desire to help improve the City's neighborhoods. Candidates should also have a proven track-record of successful mediation and be able to communicate effectively with diverse groups of people in a variety of situations. This position reports to the Director and Chief Administrative Law Judge of the Bureau of Administrative Adjudication.

The City of Syracuse Bureau of Administrative Adjudication systematically addresses blight and quality of life violations that negatively affect individuals living in substandard properties and impact the neighborhoods surrounding such properties. The goal of the Bureau is to improve compliance with property codes that affect the health and safety of residents and vitality of our City's neighborhoods by expediting the levying of fines and penalties that remain non-compliant after an established period to remedy the violation has been given. 

Typical Work Activities

  • Conduct hearings and proceedings regarding matters relating to charges of municipal code violation, statutory violations, and fee disputes relative to matters that constitute a danger or threat to the public health, safety or welfare of the City of Syracuse
  • Render decisions and issue determination or order imposing civil fines penalties
  • Hear administrative appeals and render decisions

Minimum Qualifications

Candidates shall be attorneys in good standing, admitted to practice in the state of New York for at least three (3) years.
