City of Syracuse residency is required for this position. If you are not a resident, you have six (6) months from your date of hire to establish residency.

Job Description

The employee(s) shall preside over a hearing or appeal relating to charges of municipal code violations, statutory violations and fee disputes relative to matters that constitute a danger or threat to the public health, safety or welfare consistent with New York State General Municipal Law Article 14-BB for proceedings. The employee will report to the Director and Chief Administrative Law Judge of the Bureau of Administrative Adjudication. This is an important administrative function involving specialized professional legal work for the Bureau of Administrative Adjudication within the Department of Finance for the City of Syracuse. Performs related work as required.

Typical Work Activities

  • Conducts hearings and proceedings regarding matters pending with the bureau
  • Presides at administrative hearings concerning the resolution of issues of fact and of law; administers oaths or affirmations; may issue subpoenas for the attendance of witnesses or evidence; regulates the course of the hearings in accordance with the bureau or other applicable law; evaluates evidence
  • Makes final findings of fact and final decisions, determinations or orders
  • Renders final decisions, determinations, or orders imposing civil penalties
  • Hears administrative appeals
  • May render decisions on appeals

Minimum Qualifications

Three (3) years of progressively responsible experience in the practice of law within the State of New York.

Special Requirement

Candidates must be admitted to practice before the bar of the State of New York.
