Job Description
The work involves responsibility for leading a crew and participating in routine street paving and repair and street cleaning activities. Under general supervision, an employee in this class exercises some independent judgment in planning and supervising the work of a crew of unskilled workers to ensure that the work is performed properly and on schedule. During winter months, the employee directs a crew in snow removal activities on municipal streets. Work is reviewed in progress and upon completion by on-site observation. Does related work as required.
Typical Work Activities
- Supervises and participates in the grading and paving of new streets.
- Supervises and participates in the repair and resurfacing of existing streets and the relaying of curbs, sidewalks and gutters.
- Supervises snow plowing and other snow removal activities on municipal streets and public roadways.
- Instruct subordinates in the proper use of equipment and materials.
- Records work completed and crew time on simple forms.
- Prepare accident reports relating to workers or equipment.
Knowledge, Skill, and Abilities
- Good knowledge of the methods, materials and equipment used in street grading, paving and repair.
- Good knowledge of the methods, materials and equipment used in snow and ice control including the use of road salt and other deicing agents on municipal streets.
- Good knowledge of use and capabilities of snow removal equipment on municipal streets and public roadways.
- Working knowledge of the methods and equipment used in street cleaning.
- Ability to plan the work of others.
- Ability to lead a crew of unskilled workers and to complete work on schedule.
- Ability to prepare simple records.
- Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
- Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
Minimum Qualifications
Six (6) years of work experience, or its part time equivalent, in the maintenance and cleaning of municipal streets including snow removal, brush and leaf collection, road construction and sweeping and flushing.
