Job Description
The work involves responsibility for maintaining and repairing tires and wheels on all size vehicles. This is journey level work involving skilled maintenance and repair of tires and wheels of all sizes particularly large types from snowplows, graders, and back hoes. Emphasis is placed on safety precautions which must be taken in changing large tires. The primary responsibility is in the repair and maintenance of vehicle tires and wheels to provide for optimal vehicle operation and safety. Work is performed under the general supervision of a higher-level employee. Direct supervision may be exercised over an Automotive Mechanic Helper when assigned to assist in tire service work. Does related work as required.
Typical Work Activities
- Changes and repairs tires and wheels on payloaders, graders, backhoes, automobiles and trucks
- Operates hydraulic hoist, hydraulic jack and ten and twenty ton mechanical jacks
- May operate large machinery such as payloaders, backhoes and sanitation trucks
- Routinely checks all tires, removing those deemed unsafe
- Performs related tire servicing and maintenance out-of-garage at machinery work cites when needed
- Checks and maintains proper tire air pressure on all vehicle, truck and construction equipment tires
- Maintains tire service road equipment such as a truck mounted boom crane, truck mounted air compressor, pneumatic air tools, etc.
- Maintains tire inventory by ordering new tires, sending out tires for recapping and maintaining stock items for repairs
- Sets up and maintains safety precautions and equipment
- May repair tires on the road when a vehicle has a flat
Minimum Qualifications
- Two (2) years of full-time paid work experience in repairing and maintaining tires and wheels including experience with large heavy equipment tires.
Special Requirements
- When required to operate a motor vehicle, employees must possess a valid New York State Non-CDL or CDL, including any special endorsements, as required for the type of vehicle being operated
- An employee who has been promoted to this position must undergo a trial period of no less than 30 workdays but not to exceed 90 workdays to ensure that such employee meets the minimum requirement of the position
