Job Description
The work involves responsibility for performing tree trimming and tree care activities. This is recurring work which involves standing on the ground and trimming, pruning and cutting diseased, damaged, dead or live limbs and branches by using hand saws or other gas powered chain saws. This can be hazardous work, which requires average physical strength, agility and attention to safety practices. Trees are trimmed to remove hazards or to shape growing trees for healthy growth, safety or esthetic purposes. Supervision and assignments are received from a higher-level tree trimmer or from a crew leader. Work is reviewed through observation at the job site. An employee in this class does not exercise supervision. The Tree Trimmer I is distinct from the second level by the fact that the employee performs trimming work on the ground and will use a bucket lift track to hold ropes or limbs while the Tree Trimmer II performs work. Does related work as required.
Typical Work Activities
- Uses hand saws or gasoline powered chain saws to trim diseased, damaged, dead or live limbs that post hazards to life or property and to shape growing trees
- Rigs ropes to tree limbs or trunks, tying off at ground level to relieve pressure when cutting limbs or trunks
- Cuts off damaged or dead bark using hand tools or by hand; paints exposed bark with a chemical solution
- Stacks logs or limbs of trees into piles or onto a truck; may use a gas powered chain saw to cut limbs into smaller pieces for easier stacking
- Performs tree care activities such as cutting off dead and damaged bark and brushing a chemical solution on exposed trunks and limbs to seal in sap and prevent insect infestation
- Rakes pieces of tree limbs, branches, bark, chips and saw dust into piles
- Directs traffic around tree trimming activities
- Drives a truck to the job site
- Performs aerial lift duties for training purposes an as needed on an emergency basis
- Assists with driving, backing, dumping and parking duties
- Participates in all job site safety meetings
- Participates in all safety training sessions offered in accordance with OSHA 1910.269
- Utilizes all appropriate personal protective equipment
- Maintains company-assigned equipment and gear
- Adheres to all safety rules and policies
- May perform light maintenance on gas powered chain saws by changing blades, sharpening blades, installing new spark plugs, adding gas or oil as needed, and/or cleaning air filters
Minimum Qualifications
- A) One year of work experience, or its part-time equivalent, performing tree work on the ground and operating aerial lifts
- B) One year of work experience, or its part-time equivalent, performing work as a Qualified Line-Certified Tree Trimmer certified per OSHA standard 1910.269
Special Requirement
Possession of a valid Class A or Class B Commercial Drivers License (CDL) with appropriate endorsements as required by the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles for the class of vehicle(s) being operated.
