Job Description
The work involves responsibility for performing semi-skilled tasks involving the installation, maintenance and repair of water mains and services and operating specialized motor equipment in the performance of same. In addition to performing similar duties to that of a Water Maintenance Worker I, this class has responsibility for the operation and minor servicing of specialized motor equipment used in the excavating of trenches for the installation and repair to water mains, hydrants, and meter pits. General supervision is received from a Water Department supervisor. Assignments are received verbally or through simple written work orders. Work may be reviewed in progress or upon completion by visual observation or through submission of forms indicating job performance. In performance of small tasks, the employee may function independently. Supervision may be exercised over a small number of laborers, but ordinarily this employee works as a team member under a crew leader. Does related work as required.
Typical Work Activities
- Operates specialized excavating equipment such as extractors, backhoes and payloaders in the digging of trenches for the laying or repair of water mains, excavations for the placement of meter pits
- Operates cranes in the positioning and placing of mains in trench, backfills excavation
- Operates crew service truck
- Acting as a team member, may be involved in breaking of pavement by use of a pneumatic drill; excavating earth with specialized motor equipment, connects pipes through use of welding equipment, when required; tightens bolts connecting sections
- Assists in the setting up and connection of meter pits and hydrants
- Locates and repairs curb boxes
- Flushes hydrants to clean lines
- Repair leaking valves; replaces broken valves by closing main, removing old valve, install new valve
- Installs fire lines, assembles fittings
- Operates tapping equipment and installs tapping sleeves
- Makes service taps and installs new service lines
- During winter months may thaw out services and hydrants
- May perform preventative and minor maintenance to equipment used
- May check pumps and perform minor servicing and maintenance
- May install meters for new services
- May read commercial and residential meters
- May function as a leader in assigning tasks of laborers acting as helpers
- May occasionally cut grass and shovel snow
Minimum Qualifications
- Two (2) years of work experience, or its part time equivalent, involving the actual construction, maintenance or service phases of a water distribution system water mains and appurtenances at least six (6) inches or larger, six (6) months of which must have involved demonstrated experience in the operation of construction equipment such as a backhoe, extractor, payloader, lift motor or related equipment; or
- Two (2) years of work experience, or its part time equivalent, involving the actual construction, maintenance or service phases of a water distribution system water mains and appurtenances at least six (6) inches or larger and six (6) months of any experience in the operation of construction equipment such as a backhoe, extractor, payloader, lift motor or related equipment; or
- When employed at OCWA, five (5) years as a Water Maintenance Worker I
Special Requirement
- Possession of a valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL), Class B, with appropriate endorsements as required by the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles for the class of vehicle being operated
