Broomball (winter)

Broomball is a winter sport played in ice rinks throughout the country. It is a game very similar to hockey in its formation and rules, but also incorporates some soccer strategies. The game is played with six players on each side (one goalie, two defensemen, and three forwards) and each player uses a stick (a shaft with a molded broom-shaped head) to maneuver a six-inch diameter ball up and down the ice. Instead of ice skates, players wear spongy-soled shoes to gain traction when running on the slippery surface of the ice. Helmets are required and many players wear knee pads, elbow pads, and even shoulder pads. All dates, times, and fees subject to change.

The Co-Ed Volleyball League is one of the best indoor volleyball leagues available around the Syracuse area. Offering varying levels of competition, there are four different divisions within the league, each division runs from early November, through the end of February, and play an average of 14 regular season games.

The A Classic Division, played on Thursday nights at Lincoln School or Blodgett School, is the highest level of competition available. Many of the participants played high school, college, and travel volleyball, and wish to continue to play at a high level to this day. The regular season winner from the A Classic Division automatically advances to the A City Championship, a best of three match series to see who takes home the esteemed A City Championship trophy and championship bags. All other teams qualify for the divisional playoffs, with the winner advancing to the A City Championship to play the regular season winner.

The B Classic Division, played on Tuesday nights at Lincoln School, is a step below the highest league, while still offering great competition in a casual atmosphere. Many of the participants also played high school, college, and travel volleyball. The regular season winner of the B Classic Division automatically advances to the B City Championship, which includes the regular season and divisional playoff winners of all the B Divisions.

The B2 Division, played on Wednesday nights at Lincoln School, is just a step below the B Classic Division. The regular season winner advances to the B City Championship and the remaining teams all compete in the divisional playoffs to be the second team to represent the B2 Division in the B City Championship.

The B4 Division, played on Thursday nights at Lincoln or Blodgett School, is the lowest competition offered within the Recreation Volleyball League. Teams are all still competitive and casual at the same time, which creates a very fun environment.
