Overall, property and violent crime are significantly down compared to the same time period last year and against the five-year average
Syracuse Mayor Ben Walsh and Syracuse Police Chief Joe Cecile announced the latest COMPSTAT data shows sustained reductions in crime in the City of Syracuse in 2025. Overall crime is down by 27.3% through the first seven months of the year. Violent offenses are down 18%, and property crime is 29.2% lower in the COMPSTAT report issued Aug. 11.
Crime is also down significantly when compared to the five-year average, which is considered an even more reliable indicator of public safety trends. Against that measure, overall crime is down 11.3%; violent offenses are down 25.7%; and property crime is down 7.1%. Crime data in Syracuse is consistent with – and in some categories lower than – trends being reported in other cities in the U.S.
COMPSTAT data also shows reduced gun crimes in 2025. According to the report, shots fired are down 22%; incidents of shooting with injury are 3% lower; and shooting victims injured or killed are down 4%.
“It’s important to acknowledge the hard work being done by law enforcement and the contributions of members of our community toward a safer city. Drawing attention to this improved data in no way means we are lowering our guard or taking a victory lap. We understand that for anyone who has directly experienced crime, the numbers don’t matter,” said Mayor Walsh. “Our community has also experienced heart wrenching crimes that can shake our confidence. Our resolve is stronger than ever to sustain and even improve upon this performance.”
“Our patrol officers and their commanders are motivated, engaged, and proactive, and always on the lookout for strategies that prevent crimes,” said Chief Cecile. “In addition, our detectives continue to outperform many State and National averages in investigations and arrests, but Law Enforcement can’t do it alone. Through their coordinated efforts, the Mayor’s Office to Reduce Gun Violence, as well as the Syracuse community, have also had an impact in these crime reductions.”
