Mayor Walsh Issues Snow Safety Alert as Snowstorm Approaches Syracuse

Syracuse Mayor Ben Walsh has issued a snow safety alert as a major winter storm is forecast to bring heavy snowfall and strong winds to the City of Syracuse. Snowfall rates combined with wind gusts up to 50mph are expected to create dangerous travel, including whiteout conditions. New York State has issued a statewide emergency and will be in effect until Wednesday, Dec. 31. at 7:00 a.m.

Mayor Walsh Issues Snow Safety Alert as Freezing Rain and Snow Begins

Syracuse Mayor Ben Walsh has issued a snow safety alert for sleet and heavy snow fall expected in Syracuse. As part of the alert, the City is providing key reminders about plowing, sidewalk snow removal and traffic safety. A travel advisory has been issued for Onondaga County and will be in effect until Saturday, Dec 27 at 7:00 a.m.

Department of Public Works Announces January Christmas Tree Collection

The City of Syracuse Department of Public Works (DPW) will collect natural Christmas trees curbside using a quadrant pickup schedule during the month of January. Residents should set out trees in the Northeast on Jan. 3-4, Southeast on Jan. 10-11, Southwest on Jan. 17-18, and Northwest on Jan. 24-25.

Downtown Syracuse Overnight Parking Restrictions in Effect

Seasonal odd and even parking restrictions will be in effect starting Nov. 1, in parts of Downtown Syracuse. On designated blocks, overnight on-street parking will alternate and be limited to one side. The requirements allow snowplows to effectively clear streets unobstructed by parked cars between the hours of 10:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m.

City of Syracuse Opens Swim Lesson Sign-Ups

The City of Syracuse Department of Parks & Recreation announced it will open Session I swim lesson registration on Thursday, June 26 at 4:00 p.m. for city residents, and on Friday, June 27 at 4:00 p.m. for non-city residents. There will be three sessions offered this summer.
Session I will be held at Burnet, Onondaga and Thornden Pools. This session will run from June 30 to July 11.

Mayor Walsh Announces Annual Tour for Safe and Healthy Housing

Mayor Walsh Announces Elmwood Park Sediment Removal Project

City of Syracuse Mayor Walsh announced that sediment removal will begin in Elmwood Park starting on June 2, 2025. The goal of the project is to return the brook to its state prior to the impact of flooding from Tropical Storm Fred in August 2021. Restoration efforts include sediment removal, repair of the channel walls, and the restoration of park turf.

Mayor Walsh Wins Correction of Code Violations in Eastwood

Mayor Walsh’s crackdown on bad property owners scored another victory. New York State Supreme Court Judge James P. Murphy ordered James Street Plaza LLC on Friday to correct more than two dozen code violations at a mixed-use property at 3100-06 James Street in Eastwood. The judge also awarded the City a $90,200 judgment on the property owner for failing to correct the problems.

Mayor Walsh Wins Order for Cleanup of Northside Appliance Graveyard

Syracuse Mayor Ben Walsh announced a State Supreme Court judge upheld the City’s request to require the cleanup of an unpermitted appliance graveyard on the Northside. Supreme Court Judge Gerard J. Neri ordered the owner of Kammar’s Restaurant Equipment to remove all debris, materials, equipment and other junk from City right of way around the properties at 926 and 1000 Wolf Street.

Mayor Walsh Announces Highest Annual Permitted Construction Value

Mayor Walsh announced the City of Syracuse Central Permit Office reported 2024 marked the highest permitted construction value total in Syracuse history. The $413.5 million record includes both residential and commercial building permits and represents the projected value of construction work for permits requested annually. The value eclipses the previous high of $399.7 million in 2022.

City of Syracuse to Begin Issuing Citations for Cart Violations

The City of Syracuse Department of Public Works (DPW) announced it will start issuing citations beginning Monday, Jan. 6 to property owners who do not follow setout requirements for recycling carts and resume citations for trash carts. Fines are $100 for households that fail to correct violations after receiving a citation.
