Mayor Walsh Announces Launch of Redlight and Speed Cameras

Published on September 02, 2025

Syracuse Mayor Ben Walsh launched the next phase of its School Zone Traffic Enforcement Program, introducing red light and speed cameras in and around schools across the city. The new automated enforcement tools are part of the City’s ongoing Vision Zero commitment to improving traffic safety and protecting students as they travel to and from school.

Beginning Wednesday, Sept. 3, automated enforcement cameras will be activated near schools to monitor and deter speeding and red-light violations. The City is providing a 60-day warning period during which violators will receive warning notices rather than fines. This grace period is intended to raise public awareness and encourage safe driving habits before full enforcement begins.

“Ensuring the safety of our students is a top priority,” said Mayor Walsh. “By deploying red light and speed cameras in and around school zones, we are taking a proactive step to reduce dangerous driving behaviors and create a safer environment for children and families. I urge drivers to take note of school zones and follow all traffic safety laws. We want safe streets – not tickets issued”.

“As educators, our top priority is making sure every child arrives at school ready to learn and returns home safely at the end of the day,” said Superintendent Anthony Davis.  “These new traffic enforcement measures are an important step in protecting our students as they travel to and from school. We ask drivers to slow down, pay attention, and help us create a safer environment for all children and families in our community.”

“Nothing is more important than the safety of our young people, especially when they are traveling to and from school”, said Police Chief Joseph Cecile. “This technology is not about tickets; it’s about motorists and student-pedestrian safety.  Obey the traffic laws and drive safely around school zones and everyone wins.”

Once the warning period ends, drivers caught speeding or running red lights in school zones will receive a $50 fine per violation. The fine amount is set by New York State. A $25 late penalty will be added for unpaid fines. Citations will be mailed to the vehicle owner, and signage will be posted in all enforcement areas to alert drivers of camera use.
