Firefighters Extinguish Fire on Lydell Street

Syracuse, NY- On Friday, May 16, 2025, at 11:36 p.m., Syracuse Firefighters were alerted by the Onondaga County 911 Center to a reported house on fire at 317 Lydell Street. The fire was noticed by neighbors across the street. One of those neighbors called 911 while the other ran across the street to ensure everyone got out. Firefighters from Station 3, on Bellevue Ave, arrived at the scene in approximately three minutes and found a two-and-a-half-story wood frame multi-family residence with a large amount of fire visible in the rear of the structure and smoke from multiple windows. A search team and an engine team with a hose line entered the structure to investigate further. The initial unit on scene transmitted a signal ‘99’, indicating a working fire.

As teams of firefighters moved hoses down the driveway of the structure to the rear porch, other teams of firefighters prepared to search the entire building. All occupants were confirmed out of the structure; the occupants of the downstairs apartment discovered the fire and evacuated. The neighbor notified the occupant of the upstairs apartment. Two hoses were dragged down the driveway to the rear downstairs apartment. The fire burning up the exterior of the building was extinguished, and then crews pushed inside the first floor. A third hose was deployed into the upstairs apartment. Fire was burning in the rear of that apartment as well. The fire was declared out after approximately one hour. Crews were on scene for almost four hours for extinguishment, removal of smoke, clean up, and investigation.

The building contains two apartments, both suffered fire, smoke, and water damage. This fire displaced three occupants; they are being assisted by the Red Cross. The origin and cause of the fire are still under investigation. There were no injuries to civilians or to Fire Department personnel.

Syracuse Police, American Medical Response, National Grid, and the American Red Cross also responded to the scene. We thank our partners at the 911 Center, SPD, AMR, National Grid, and the Red Cross.
