Mayor Walsh Announces Updates to Thornden Park Picnic Pavilion

Published on August 21, 2025

Syracuse Mayor Walsh announced the replacement of the Thornden Park Picnic Pavilion at a ribbon cutting ceremony on Aug 21. The pavilion is located at the site of the previous structure and includes upgraded features to enhance longevity and safety.

The project, led by the Department of Parks, Recreation and Youth Programs, involved the design and construction of a gable shelter that provides standing capacity for up to 45 individuals. The new construction features a metal roof to extend the lifespan of the shelter.

“We are committed to creating both beautiful and safe upgrades in our city parks,” said Mayor Walsh. “By replacing the old shelter with a new design, we’ve created a space that is more structurally sound and welcoming for residents to gather and connect.”

The shelter is a part of the city’s ongoing initiatives to develop and improve outdoor recreational spaces. Funding was provided by the Parks Capital Improvement Fund.
