City of Syracuse Department of Water Releases 2025 Sanitary Survey

The City of Syracuse Department of Water announced the release of the 2025 Sanitary Survey, a comprehensive review conducted by the New York State Department of Health (NYSDOH) to evaluate the condition, operations, and performance of the City’s water system. The survey identifies strengths as well as areas requiring improvement to ensure the continued safety and reliability of the water system.
As part of the City’s commitment to transparency, residents can now access the full survey findings, including all identified violations and recommendations, by visiting syr.gov/2025-Sanitary-Survey. The site provides explanations of each item and outlines the steps the Department of Water is taking to address them.
“We know how important it is for residents to understand the condition of our water system,” said Commissioner Brandt. “The sanitary survey gives us a roadmap for strengthening infrastructure, improving operations, and continuing to deliver high-quality drinking water. Making this information public is an essential part of our responsibility to the community.”
The Department of Water has already begun implementing corrective actions, which include:
  • Infrastructure improvements such as targeted replacements and upgrades to treatment and distribution equipment.
  • Operational enhancements including updated maintenance schedules, staff training, and improved record‑keeping practices.
  • Compliance actions to address violations identified during the survey, with many corrective measures already underway or completed.
  • Long‑term planning efforts focused on resiliency, system modernization, and prioritizing investments based on survey findings.
