Syracuse, NY- On Saturday, July 12, 2025, at 10:08 p.m., Syracuse Firefighters were alerted by the Onondaga County 911 Center to a reported fire at 241 South Collingwood Ave. Crews from Station 17 on Burnet Ave. arrived at the scene in 3 minutes and found a 1 ½ story home with smoke coming from the door leading to the basement. Firefighters began stretching lines into the house as other teams began searching for victims. A Signal “99” was transmitted, indicating a working fire.

Crews found the fire in the basement and began extinguishing as other firefighters began searching the entire structure. A dog was located, brought outside, and turned over to EMS, who cleaned the animal and ensured it was unharmed. The fire was under control in 10 minutes and declared out after 30 minutes. Crews remained on scene for 2 hours, cleaning up and assisting investigators.

One occupant was home at the time of the fire and was able to make it out before the fire department arrived. The occupant was evaluated by AMR and released on scene. The basement of the house suffered fire damage, and other parts of the building sustained minor smoke and water damage. The displaced occupant received assistance from The Red Cross. According to Syracuse Fire Investigators, the fire originated in the basement, caused by spontaneous combustion. There were no injuries to firefighters during the incident.
