Mayor Walsh Launches Community Snowplow Naming Competition

Published on July 01, 2025

Syracuse Mayor Ben Walsh announced the launch of a community-wide snowplow naming competition, giving residents the opportunity to help christen the city's snow removal fleet with creative and memorable names.

The competition will accept submissions through July 25, 2025. Community members are encouraged to participate by submitting their most creative, fun, or Syracuse-inspired names for the city's snowplows.

"The names on our existing plows have been a great way to engage our community and celebrate Syracuse's legendary winters," said Mayor Walsh. "Our snowplow operators work tirelessly to keep our streets safe and passable during snow season. Giving memorable names to the vehicles these hardworking professionals drive adds a bit of personality and community spirit to their important work."

To submit an entry, residents can visit goto.syr.gov/Snowplow. Selections will be announced after submissions are closed.

Syracuse has long been known for its significant snowfall and efficient snow removal operations, a reputation that was solidified this year when the city claimed the coveted Golden Snowball Award for receiving the most snowfall among upstate New York's five largest cities during the 2024-2025 winter season. The naming competition continues the city's tradition of finding creative ways to embrace winter weather while fostering community engagement.
