Firefighters Called to Fire on Merriman Ave

Syracuse, NY- On Saturday, May 17, 2025, at 11:16 p.m., Syracuse Firefighters were alerted by the Onondaga County 911 Center to a reported house on fire at 118 Merriman Ave. Firefighters from Station 3, on Bellevue Ave, arrived at the scene two minutes later and found a two-story wood frame single-family structure with a large amount of fire visible on the second floor. Initial Units transmitted a signal ‘99’, indicating a working fire.

As teams of firefighters moved hoses into the structure to search for and extinguish the fire, other teams of firefighters prepared to methodically search the entire building. Three hoses were brought into the building to extinguish the fire. All areas of the building were searched, confirming all occupants had evacuated the structure before the arrival of Fire Department personnel. The fire was contained to the room of origin and quickly extinguished. The Squad company positioned a ladder to ascend to the roof and cut a ventilation hole. This hole allows the toxic smoke and heat to escape from the building. The fire was declared out after thirty minutes. Crews remained on scene for an additional hour and forty-five minutes to ventilate the structure, pack up equipment, and investigate the fire.

The fire was contained to a second-floor bedroom. The building suffered fire, smoke, and water damage. Seven occupants were displaced; the Red Cross is assisting them. The cause of the fire is still under investigation. There were no injuries to civilians or to Fire Department personnel.

Syracuse Police, American Medical Response, National Grid, and the American Red Cross also responded to the scene. We thank our partners at the 911 Center, SPD, AMR, National Grid, and the Red Cross.
