Mayor Walsh Statement on Onondaga Park Pool Shooting

Published on June 24, 2025

I’m heartbroken by the shooting this afternoon outside Onondaga Park pool. Losing a teenager with so much life ahead makes this tragedy even more devastating. I ask all of Syracuse to join me in sending prayers and support to the victim’s family, loved ones and all those impacted by what occurred.

Syracuse Police are actively investigating this case. I have full confidence they will find the person responsible and bring them to justice. Anyone who has information about this shooting should contact the Syracuse Police Department Criminal Investigations Division at 315-442-5222.

The Department of Parks, Recreation and Youth Programs is providing support to the staff on duty at the time of the incident who acted quickly and heroically to protect the safety of everyone present. The reopening date of Onondaga Park pool is still to be determined. We will have increased Syracuse Police presence around our pools in the days and weeks ahead.

As I was leaving the park this afternoon, it made me sad and angry to see an empty pool at a time it should have been filled with activity. Our parks are a place of refuge for city residents and are important to us all. This incident will not change that.
