City Announces Speed Camera Locations for Summer School Enforcement

The City of Syracuse announced the designated speed camera locations that will be active during the 2026 summer school session. The cameras are part of the City’s ongoing School Zone Traffic Enforcement program, which is designed to reduce speeding, increase driver awareness, and protect students attending summer academic programs.

Speed enforcement cameras will be in operation during active school hours. Because these hours vary by location, the City advises all motorists to observe posted speed limits on weekdays from 7 am to 6 pm. Motorists traveling more than the posted school-zone speed limit during these times may receive a violation by mail. Redlight and bus stop-arm enforcement remain in full operation.

“With summer school programs approaching, many students will be walking, biking, or being dropped off in area school zones,” said Mayor Owens. “These cameras are a critical tool to remind drivers to slow down and help ensure the safety of our students and families.”

Recent data from the City’s school‑zone speed enforcement program show meaningful progress in improving safety near schools. While some of the highest recorded speeds reached alarming levels, including more than 70 mph near both Clary and Lincoln Middle Schools, overall violations have declined significantly. From November to April, daily violations dropped by roughly 55%, falling from about 1,275 per day to approximately 575 per camera. The most dangerous offenders, those driving 31 mph or more over the limit, decreased by 46% during the same period. These indicators show that the enforcement program is effectively encouraging safer driving behavior around school zones.
