Syracuse Fire Department Responds to Reported House Fire on Bellevue

Published on August 13, 2022

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – On August 13, 2022 at 11:35 p.m., Syracuse firefighters were alerted by the 911 Center to a possible house fire in the 1400 block of Bellevue Ave. Updates given by dispatchers indicated that multiple children and adults had evacuated but that another occupant was still in the house. Engine 3 (Bellevue Ave.) arrived in under three minutes to find a 2½-story, wood-framed house with fire on the first floor. First arriving firefighters stretched a 200-foot attack handline into place and began an aggressive interior attack to extinguish the fire. During this fire attack, other teams of firefighters searched both the fire-floor and other floors of the house for victims; none were found. The unaccounted for occupant was later found to be safe at different a location. Crews worked to check for extension of fire into other parts of the house. Firefighters successfully contained the spread of fire to a single room on the first floor. Crews worked to ventilate smoke and toxic gases from the house and extinguish any remaining pockets of fire.
Thankfully all residents had already evacuated, but reports of occupants still in a fire building are taken extremely seriously and Syracuse firefighters will work tirelessly and put themselves at great personal risk to find and rescue victims. SFD’s first priority on every alarm is to save lives.
Functioning smoke detectors in the house alerted the second floor tenants to the fire on the first floor. Six occupants were displaced due to damage to the electrical utilities, preventing power from being restored to the house. They were assisted by the American Red Cross. No injuries were reported. The fire is under investigation by Syracuse Fire investigators. We thank our partners at the 911 Center, National Grid, Syracuse Police, and AMR.
