Firefighters Quickly Extinguish Fire at Burger King

Syracuse, NY- On Saturday, January 25, 2025, at 248 a.m., Syracuse Firefighters were alerted by the Onondaga County 911 Center to a fire alarm activation at 623 Butternut Street, a Burger King restaurant. Upon arrival, three minutes later, firefighters observed smoke throughout the restaurant. The Incident Commander upgraded the call to a reported structure fire; additional units were dispatched. When companies entered the restaurant, they encountered moderate smoke and heat. Visibility continued to decrease, and the heat encountered increased as units searched deeper into the building for the fire. The Incident Commander transmitted a signal ‘99’, indicating a working fire.

As teams of firefighters from Truck 2 searched for the fire, a team from Engine 2 stretched a hose line into the restaurant. As the additional resources arrived, additional hoses were stretched, the gas and electricity to the building were secured, and ventilation hatches on the roof were opened. The fire was located in the rear of the building. One sprinkler head had tripped and kept the fire in check. Truck 2 and Engine 2 quickly extinguished the remaining fire and ensured it was not extending beyond the immediate area. The fire was extinguished in less than ten minutes from dispatch. Crews were at the scene for approximately an hour and a half for extinguishment, clearing smoke from the building, cleaning up, and assisting investigators.

The fire occurred in the rear of the restaurant. The building suffered fire, smoke, and water damage. It was turned over to building representatives. Syracuse Fire Department investigators are still investigating the origin and cause. There were no injuries to civilians or to Fire Department personnel.

A total of 41 Fire Department Personnel, including command and support staff, responded to this incident. Syracuse Police, American Medical Response, and National Grid also responded to the scene. We thank our partners at the 911 Center, SPD, AMR, and National Grid.
