Firefighters Discover Fire on Shonnard Street
Syracuse, NY- On Friday, February 28, at 11:08 a.m., Syracuse Firefighters from Station 5 on N Geddes St were clearing a medical call when they smelled a burning odor and heard a fire alarm going off inside an apartment at 335 Shonnard Street. They requested the Onondaga County 911 Center dispatch the appropriate units for a fire alarm response. That team of firefighters on Mini 5 began to investigate. They located an apartment that had a considerable smoke condition and requested the balance of the assignment for a structure fire. The smoke condition worsened, and an active fire was found in an apartment. A signal ‘99’, indicating a working fire, was transmitted.
When the first engine arrived, those firefighters already on the scene stretched a hose line. As they already knew the location of the fire and had ensured no occupants were inside, they could get to and extinguish the fire quickly. Other teams of firefighters moved hoses into other areas of the building to ensure the fire had not spread further. Teams of firefighters also searched the entire building for any remaining occupants, all of whom had evacuated or were not home. It was confirmed that the fire had not spread to other parts of the building. The initial fire was extinguished within ten minutes of the initial responders calling for additional resources. An additional ten minutes was spent ensuring the fire had not spread. The fire was declared out after approximately twenty minutes. Crews were on the scene for approximately one hour and fifteen minutes to extinguish the fire, pick up, remove smoke from the building, and assist the fire investigator.
The building is a two-story wood frame structure containing four apartments. The structure sustained smoke, fire, and water damage on the first floor in the apartment where the fire was. That apartment was undergoing renovations. The other three apartments in the building were occupied. The four residents of the building are being assisted by the American Red Cross and the building owner. It is unknown at this time if they will be able to remain in their apartments or be displaced for some period of time. The investigation into the cause and origin of the fire is ongoing. There were no injuries to civilians or to Fire Department personnel. Syracuse Police, American Medical Response, National Grid, and the American Red Cross also responded to the scene. We thank our partners at the 911 Center, SPD, AMR, National Grid, and the Red Cross.
