Firefighters Called to Butternut Street Apartment Fire
Syracuse, NY- On Sunday, March 9, 2025, at 7:39 p.m., Syracuse Firefighters were alerted by the Onondaga County 911 Center to a reported structure fire at 1313 Butternut Street. Firefighters from Station 2 on Lodi Street arrived at the scene three minutes later and found a three-story apartment building with multiple people stating there was a fire in apartment 26 with smoke visible from multiple windows. Occupants of the building were exiting as crews were stretching a hose line to the third floor. The Incident Commander transmitted a signal ‘99’, indicating a working fire.
As teams of firefighters moved hoses into the building, other teams of firefighters prepared to search the entire building. The crews reached the smoke filled third floor hallway and crawled to the reported apartment. When firefighters made entry they encountered a flames and thick smoke to the floor. The apartment was quickly searched while the firefighers with the hose worked to extinguish the fire. An unconscious male was found in the apartment. He was quickly removed from the apartment, taken back down the stairs, and to an awaiting AMR ambulance crew and stretcher. The male was conscious in the AMR ambulance before being transported to Upstate Downtown. The fire was out and the victim was with AMR approximately ten minutes after the initial dispatch. The searches of the remaining parts of the building confirmed all other occupants had evacuated safely. Firefighters remain on the scene working to clear the building of smoke, clean up, assist with the investigation.
The building is a multi-unit apartment building. The fire apartment suffered fire, smoke, and water damage. The rest of the structure suffered smoke and water damage. It is unknown how many people will be displaced by this fire; the Red Cross is on the scene assisting occupants. The investigation into the cause and origin of the fire is ongoing. One civilian was transported form the scene, that was the individual found in the fire apartment. There were no injuries to Fire Department personnel. Syracuse Police, American Medical Response, National Grid, and the American Red Cross also responded to the scene. We thank our partners at the 911 Center, SPD, AMR, National Grid, and the Red Cross.
