Firefighters Quickly Extinguish John Street Fire

Syracuse, NY- On Thursday, April 17, 2025, at 4:53 p.m., Syracuse Firefighters were alerted by the Onondaga County 911 Center to a reported structure fire in the vicinity of John Street and Spring Street, on the City’s North Side. Firefighters from Station 2, on Lodi Street, arrived at the scene in four minutes and observed a large amount of smoke from the rear of 308 John Street, a two-and-a-half-story wood frame structure. A signal ‘99’, indicating a working fire, was transmitted.

As teams of firefighters moved hoses to the rear of the boarded-up, vacant structure, other teams of firefighters prepared to search the entire building. The fire was contained to the rear porch. Searches of the building were completed, there was no one inside. The main body of fire was extinguished after approximately 10 minutes, and the fire was declared out after approximately 12 minutes. Crews remained at the scene for another hour, cleaning up and assisting the fire investigator.

The building is a vacant single-family residence. The fire was contained to the rear porch, which suffered fire and water damage. The interior was checked; the fire did not extend inside. The origin and cause investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information is asked to call the Fire Chief’s Office at 315-473-5525 and ask to speak to the fire investigator. There were no injuries to civilians or to Fire Department personnel.

Syracuse Police, American Medical Response, and National Grid, also responded to the scene. We thank our partners at the 911 Center, SPD, AMR, and National Grid.
