Mayor Walsh Announces Adopt-a-Trail Initiative

Published on March 11, 2025

SYRACUSE, NY – Syracuse Mayor Ben Walsh announced the launch of the Syracuse Department of Parks & Recreation Adopt-a-Trail initiative. The new program invites groups, businesses, and individuals to adopt a section along one of two of Syracuse’s most beloved trails: the Onondaga Creekwalk Trail (CWT) and the Empire State Trail (EST) portion on Erie Boulevard East.  Adopt-a-Trail participants will be responsible for removing litter, reporting maintenance needs, and hosting three cleanup events over the course of the year.

“Adopt-a-Trail offers an opportunity for park users to play an active role in protecting the areas they frequently visit,” said Mayor Walsh. “This coordinated effort will help ensure that trail sections remain accessible and that resources are preserved.”

How It Works

  • Step 1: Complete an online interest form at https://syr.gov/adoptatrail
  • Step 2: A staff member will contact you within (5) five business days to discuss the commitment and schedule the cleanup events.
  • Step 3: Fill out park cleanup request form once dates, projects, and times are confirmed.

If you are interested in participating in a cleanup event but prefer not committing to adopting a trail section, there are plenty of opportunities for you to get involved. Visit https://syr.gov/Events for the latest information on upcoming cleanup events, giving you the opportunity to join us in making a positive impact on our community and environment. Whether you’re looking to volunteer individually or as part of a group, City Parks welcomes support to help maintain cleaner, healthier green spaces for everyone.

In neighborhoods around Syracuse, the City also operates Mayor Walsh's Clean-up 'Cuse Adopt-a-Block program.  It allows individuals, organizations, schools, and businesses to take responsibility for at least two city blocks, committing to a monthly cleanup of a designated area and “on the spot” litter pickup, as necessary.
