South Avenue Bridge Rehabilitation Project

The existing bridge over Onondaga Creek was built in 1896 with rehabilitation in 1971 and 1995. It is a single span, 66 ft. long structure consisting of a steel multi-girder superstructure with a concrete deck. Each end of the bridge is supported by masonry abutments on piles. The Creekwalk trail passes underneath the bridge. The condition of the structure has deteriorated to the point that it needs rehabilitation to avoid further deterioration leading to closure of the roadway.

The bridge work will require utilization of an off-site detour. There will be one Northbound and two Southbound detour routes for vehicular traffic. The Northbound detour will utilize Onondaga Avenue, Bellevue Avenue, Midland Avenue, and Martin Luther King West. The Southbound traffic on South Avenue will utilize Bellevue Avenue and Onondaga Avenue to detour around the bridge closure. The Southbound traffic on Cortland Avenue and West Kennedy Street/NY Route 175 will utilize Midland Avenue and West Colvin Street.

Pedestrians on South Avenue will be detoured along Centennial Drive, Lower Onondaga Park Drive, the Creekwalk, Lower Onondaga Park Drive, Rich Street, Hudson Street, and Crescent Avenue. The Creekwalk passing underneath the South Avenue bridge will also be closed. Pedestrians and bicyclists on the Creekwalk will be detoured at Hunt Avenue onto Onondaga Creek Parkway, Centennial Drive, and Lower Onondaga Park Drive.

This work will require no permanent or temporary Right-Of-Way acquisitions from the adjacent properties.

The City of Syracuse received New York State BridgeNY funding for this project. The City applied for these funds due to the age and condition of the bridge and the need to make repairs to improve connectivity over the Creek in this neighborhood.
