Job Description
The work involves responsibility for planning, organizing and supervising the operation of a large water distribution system. An employee in this class is responsible for the maintenance, operation and construction activities of the water distribution system. Additional responsibility is encompassed in supervising the maintenance and repair of the divisions motor vehicle fleet and construction equipment, water meter repair and the functions of the business office. Policies and programs are outlined by a higher level administrator with considerable leeway allowed for the implementation of these programs. Work is reviewed through conference and reports. Supervision is exercised over a large number of employees. Does related work as required.
Typical Work Activities
- Supervises the overall operation, maintenance and construction in the water distribution system
- Plans and schedules maintenance work
- Conducts employee/prospective employee interviews; takes action on disciplinary matters
- Participates in preparing estimates of costs for proposed water main extension and other major items of capital expenditure
- Periodically reviews water consumption and pressure readings, reservoir levels and chlorine residual figures to gauge the water system's performance and, in consultation with the Engineer (Water), takes or directs any necessary corrective action
- Schedules crew assignments
- Inspects construction and repair work in progress
- Investigates complaints and suspected leakages
- Plans, supervises and may participate in the operation of system valves
Minimum Qualifications
- Promotion: One (1) year of permanent competitive class status in the title of Assistant Superintendent of Water Maintenance and Operation
- Open Competitive: Seven (7) years of full time work experience, or its part time equivalent, in the operation and maintenance of a water supply system, two (2) years of which must have been in a supervisory capacity
Special Requirement
Candidates must obtain a Class D Water Distribution license issued by the New York State Health Department prior to successful completion of the probationary period for this position.
