Mayor Walsh Statement on Appellate Division Statue Ruling

Published on July 28, 2023

Statement by Syracuse Mayor Ben Walsh:

“The Appellate Division’s ruling is a win for the whole community. Our goal has always been to create a public space that is welcoming to all and honors Italian American heritage. We can do both without holding on to a symbol of colonialism in the heart of downtown Syracuse.

From my first announcement regarding a path forward for Columbus Circle, I have said we would follow the steps in state and local law. The Appellate Division ruled in favor of the City allowing us to proceed with the established process to create a heritage and education site that celebrates the rich diversity of Syracuse. I stand committed to working with all parties in creating this public space and preserving history.”
