Overview

The City of Syracuse Local Waterfront Revitalization Program (LWRP) is a comprehensive approach to re-imagining the City's waterfront area along Onondaga Lake and the Inner Harbor. This is a joint effort between the City of Syracuse and Onondaga County to support natural resource protection, enhance waterfront access, improve multi-modal connectivity options, and provide economic revitalization opportunities. This process is made possible with financial and technical support provided through the New York State Department of State (NYS DOS) Local Waterfront Revitalization Program.

Background

The preparation of a LWRP is a multi-year process that will result in a planning document encompassing a community-driven vision for revitalization and specific project and policies to address local and regional waterway issues, guide future development, and promote public waterfront access.

The planning process includes the following key steps:

  • Developing an inventory and analysis of existing conditions within the Waterfront Revitalization Area (WRA) Boundary (image of map is located in the WRA section).
  • Identifying policies and programs to support waterfront revitalization goals.
  • Defining local and regional projects to enhance the WRA and support revitalization goals.

Waterfront Revitalization Area

The Syracuse Waterfront Revitalization Area (WRA) is shown below. This area includes land along Onondaga Lake, Onondaga Creek and the Inner Harbor generally between I-690 and I-81. Key landmarks and destinations within the WRA include NBT Bank Stadium, Destiny USA, CNY Regional Market, Onondaga Creekwalk, Empire State Trail and Loop the Lake Trails, and the Empower Federal Credit Union Amphitheater.
