Special Operations

Special Operations is made up of our Rescue Company, Squad Company, Hazardous Materials Company, Aircraft Crash Rescue, and Marine Unit. These groups of motivated firefighters train on specialized skills in addition to their continuous fire and emergency medical responsibilities.

 

Rescue Company

Responds to every major structure fire in the City of Syracuse.  Performs rapid, thorough search and removal for victims of fires.

Trained in many specialized disciplines including motor vehicle accidents and extrication, elevator emergencies, confined space and industrial emergencies to name a few.

Squad Company

Responds to every major structure in the City of Syracuse. Performs vertical ventilation, search and and rescue, and any other tasks necessary on the fire ground.

Also respond to all full arrests, overdoses, and many other traumatic emergencies.

Backfills for the Rescue Company when needed.

Hazardous Materials

Responds to all HAZMAT incidents in the City of Syracuse.  Are trained to contain and mitigate all Hazardous Materials involving solid, liquid, gas, and vapor leaks or spills.

The Syracuse Fire Department Haz-Mat company is part of a broader response group that includes all of Onondaga County.

Marine Unit

The Marine Unit responds to all water emergencies in the City of Syracuse.  Multiple assets for rescuing those involved in water emergencies are staged at various firehouses, ready to be staffed by firefighters specially trained to assist in any number of incidents that involve the various bodies of water found in the City of Syracuse.

Many of the departments firefighters are specially trained to deal with swift water rescue situations as well.
