Fire Prevention Bureau

The Fire Prevention Bureau works together with businesses and the community. We provide information to the community, developers, architects, contractors, and city departments. The enforcement of the New York State Uniform Fire Prevention and Building Code and the Property Conservation Code of the City of Syracuse protect people and property from dangerous conditions in new and existing buildings. The Fire Prevention Bureau also develops and presents fire prevention and safety programs to our community.

Emergency Home Escape Planning

Family members must know what to do in the event of a fire in their home. A home escape plan must be created and practiced so that each person knows exactly what to do. It also is important to practice Exit Drills in the Home.

Fire Department Emergency Key Box

Key boxes allow fire departments immediate access when an emergency exists. It is the policy of the Syracuse Fire Department that key boxes will be installed on buildings that have a fire alarm and/or sprinkler system.

Fire Protection System - Out of Service

Notifications must be made if any fire protection equipment or life safety system is inoperable, defective, or inadequate, or if it is removed from service for more than eight hours in a twenty-four-hour period.

Request Installation of Smoke Detectors

The Syracuse Fire Department will install smoke detectors into owner occupied structures in the City of Syracuse.

The Syracuse Fire Department is committed to providing fire and life safety education to Syracuse’s diverse communities.
